Emil Johnson
Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Emil Johnson joined Yale as Head Coach of Strength and Conditioning in the summer of 2005. Johnson oversees a program that includes 35 varsity sports and more than 1,000 athletes.

Johnson joined the Bulldogs from the University of Hartford, where he was the director of strength and conditioning since 2001. Johnson served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Maine for two years prior to that, and was the men's basketball strength and conditioning coach at DePaul in 1998-99.

Johnson is a 1998 graduate of UMass-Boston with a B.S. in exercise physiology. He was a captain and three-year starting quarterback for the Beacons in football and also played one season of baseball. Following graduation he spent a semester as a strength and conditioning intern at Northeastern.

Johnson is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (C.S.C.S.), the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and USA Weightlifting (Club Coach Level 1 Certified).

Joe Maher
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Joe Maher joined the Yale strength and conditioning staff in the fall of 2007. Maher was the assistant strength & conditioning coach at Richmond from 2005-07. The Spiders' football team won an Atlantic 10 Championship under his watch. During that time, he also served as head coach of the U-16AA Richmond Royals hockey club. Prior to that, he was a graduate assistant in the Kinesiology Department at LSU and a coach at the USA Weightlifting Development Center in Shrevport, La., from 2004-05. Maher also worked as an assistant sports physiologist at the U.S. Olympic Center's Athlete Performance Laboratory.

He played hockey at the University of Rhode Island and coached and competed in the 2005 Collegiate National Weightlifting Championships. Maher coached and co-directed the 2004 American Open Championships, coached at the 2005 Junior National Championships and co-directed the 2005 Pan-American Championships. He has written many articles on strength & conditioning and owns a master's degree in education.

Kathryn Whartenby
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Kathryn Whartenby joined the Yale strength and conditioning staff in the fall of 2007. Whartenby received a master's degree from Florida, where she worked with the women's basketball, soccer and gymnastics teams. She also helped design and implement a strength & conditioning program for the Gators' cheerleading squad. While at Florida, she also taught classes for the Sport and Fitness Program and developed a fitness program for the Florida Department of Corrections. Whartenby has also worked as a personal trainer. She received her bachelor's degree from Tusculum College in 2005.
