2007 Yale Youth Day This Saturday

Sept. 17, 2007

Clinics with Yale coaches and student-athletes mentoring New Haven elementary school children. The finals of New Haven Park & Recreation's pass-kick competition. Youth cheerleaders performing with the Bulldog sideline spirit squad. An educational and fun youth fair. Youth football league games on the historic Yale Bowl's Class of '54 Field. Kids helping the Yale Band form a giant "Y" on the field at halftime. These are typical Yale Youth Day events and the 2007 edition is this Saturday, the day the Elis host Cornell in the home football season opener.

More than a dozen buses loaded with New Haven school children will descend upon the Yale Bowl area to take part in the Community Outreach Committee's (COC) kickoff event.

The 2007 Youth Day Fair currently includes Safe Kids, police departments from West Haven, New Haven and Yale, the New Haven Fire Department, American Medical Response (AMR), CT Trails Council Girl Scouts, Rock Cats Baseball, New Britain Park and Rec (Moonbounce & Seaweed Monster) and the Connecticut State Police Canine Department. All of these groups will have some time of interactive venue set up on the grass in front of hospitality village along Central Avenue.

Youth Day provides T-shirts for the kids as well as lunch, music and other entertaining activities. This event has been a great success for a number of decades thanks to the committed student-athletes who volunteer their time and the Community Outreach Committee.

The youth football games involve New Haven middle schools Troop and Betsy Ross at 9 am in the Bowl and a Shoreline Youth League contest between Cheshire and North Branford at 4:30 p.m.

"It is a great day for all of the participating youth in the New Haven area. The department of athletics at Yale takes pride in providing this special day for the kids," says Greg Brinn, assistant director of athletics. "It really gets our academic year outreach program off to a great start."
