LONDON - A day after beating the seeded “A” crew from Oxford Brookes, a combination crew of Yale heavyweights and lightweights lost to Newcastle by 1 1/4 lengths in the Henley Royal Regatta’s 4+ Prince Albert Challenge Cup Thursday. The Bulldogs rowed through their competition on Wednesday but could not pull off the same feat Thursday, trailing at the Barrier and at Fawley.
The Yale crew was composed of John Grunyk '10 and 2010 captain Brendan McCook '10 from the lightweights and rising senior Duncan Logie and Antonio Sirianni '10 from the heavyweights. Ian Schmertzler '10 was the coxswain.
The Prince Albert Challenge Cup also includes heavyweight crews from Ivy League rivals Harvard and Princeton. Princeton lost to Imperial College London by three-fourths of a length Wednesday. Harvard beat Isis boat club by two-thirds of a length Wednesday, then beat Georgetown by five lengths Thursday. The Crimson will face University College (Dublin, Ireland) in the semifinals Friday, while Imperial College London faces Newcastle.
