No. 6 Bulldogs Advance to Second Round

Bulldogs Move On From Group One

CASCADE LOCKS, Ore.—The No. 6 Yale coed sailing team kicked off the National Championships with a day of team racing, completing round one of the ICSA National Team Race Championship. Despite being in an extremely competitive group, the Bulldogs live to sail another day in the gold fleet, finishing with a record of three wins and three losses.

Racing began in the morning with 12 to 15 knots of breeze that dropped and settled around ten knots for a bit. The Bulldogs began the day with wins against UC Irvine, Tulane and Northwestern. The infamous Gorge breeze finally made an appearance after remaining dormant since Monday with puffs in the low 20s. The Bulldogs finished the day with three losses to some of the strongest teams on the water—Georgetown, Roger Williams and College of Charleston.

Starting tomorrow the Bulldogs will sail in two gold fleet round robins consisting of the top four teams from each of the qualifying groups. Along with Georgetown, Roger Williams and College of Charleston, Yale will also face group two qualifiers Boston College, St. Mary's, Stanford and Hobart William Smith. The other six teams that did not qualify for the golf fleet will sail a consolation round robin. The top four teams from the two gold fleet round robins will then sail a single round robin to determine the National Champion.

While the Bulldogs had an up and down day, their overall record is reset. However, unlike at other regattas, due to the need for as many races as possible at the National Championships, Yale's three races against the teams in group one that qualified for the gold fleet will carry over. The results from the two gold fleet round robins combined with the results final four round robin determine the teams' overall records and the National Champion. The Bulldogs have two more long days of team racing left in the 2011 season giving them plenty of time to display their skills.
