NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale coed sailing team will compete this weekend in a conference championship as well as two major interconference regattas and a small regional event. The New England Men's Singlehanded championships will be held at Roger Williams University. The Bulldogs will compete there for four qualifying spots to make it to the national championships in St. Petersburg, Fla. in November. Sailors will also compete at Tufts for the Hood Trophy, the most competitive double-handed event in New England this weekend, and at the St. Mary's Intersectional, the Mid-Atlantic District's best event. Lastly, the Bulldogs will sail at the Salt Pond Invite at the University of Rhode Island.
Competing at the singlehanded championships will be first-year Adam Wolnikowski, junior Nic Baird and, recently returning from the laser world championships where he finished 49th in the gold fleet, senior Malcolm Lamphere. At Tufts, first-year Shawn Harvey and senior KB Knapp will sail in A division while sophomore Dylan DiMarchi and first-year Sonia Lingos-Utley will compete in B division. Making the long drive to St. Mary's will be junior Nick Hernandez skippering for Kira Woods in A division. B division will be sailed by senior Casey Klingler and first-year Claudia Loiacono. Senior women's captain Claire Huebner will go as a heavy crew substitute. Finally, going to URI will be most of the rest of the team with seniors Patrick Buehler and Christopher Champa leading first-years Kathleen Wells, Martin Tipton, Nicholas Marwell, Becca Rose, Mina Cezairli and Emery Wallace.
With Hurricane Jose passing off the coast, conditions in the North East for the weekend will likely start out as quite windy, slowly lightening through the weekend. All from the shifty, northerly direction.
