ANNAPOLIS, M.D. – The Bulldogs team race group completed their second weekend of sailing this weekend at the Graham Hall hosted by the Naval Academy. After a week of spring break training and weekend off to practice against the alumni, the team came back to the game hoping to see how well they would fare against other top teams after a week of intense training. They were met in Maryland with decent wind from a variable, but not incredible shifty direction. Saturdays racing was done in a much less stable wind, while Sunday saw steadier conditions.
The Bulldogs struggled a bit on day one. On the course, they were sailing great, but they had difficulty getting off the starting line well and were not satisfied with their fleet racing capabilities in many of the early races. However, they continued to learn and adapt from their mistakes, dropping only one race on Sunday and winning the top six outright with 1-2-3 combos in several races. The team ended up in third place, after ending Saturday in fifth. They were just one race away from second and two races from first. They are hungry for the top spot next weekend at the Friis Trophy.
Sailing for Yale at this event were any combination of skippers senior Malcolm Lamphere, juniors Nick Hernandez and Nic Baird, and first-year Shawn Harvey, and crews junior Kira Woods, sophomore Graceann Nicolosi, and first-years Sonia Lingos-Utley and Claudia Loiacono. First-year Nicholas Marwell was also at the event, but as a reserve heavy crew in a light wind regatta who also happened to be sick, he was not able to sail.
