BRISTOL, R.I. – The Bulldogs were welcomed back to New England in classic fashion – temperatures in the thirties, some snow showers and winds up to twenty-five knots on Sunday. The team came away with the win after beating the home and first ranked team Roger Williams in the last race of the event. The race took place in the windiest part of the day, which resulted in several capsizes and some exciting situations.
The Bulldogs again showed a slower start to the event, losing races in the first round but going undefeated in the gold round. A loss to Brown resulting from extremely shifty breezes which saw the race invert completely on Saturday was characteristic of the day, which was dominated by a variable northerly. Saturday was all about playing the shifts, while Sunday became more about boat handling, with fifteen knots or more of wind from the beginning of the day.
Competing for the Bulldogs were skippers senior Malcolm Lamphere, juniors Nick Hernandez and Nic Baird, and first-year Shawn Harvey, and crews senior KB Knapp, junior Kira Woods, sophomore Graceann Nicolosi, and first-years Sonia Lingos-Utley and Nicholas Marwell. Harvey also crewed during the final round in a couple of races.
With the first win of the season under their belt, the team is feeling better with only two weeks until the New England qualifiers. They'll keep working on discipline and consistency in practice in the upcoming weeks.
