NORFOLK, Virg. – The Yale Coed sailing team finished their run at the Laser Performance Team Racing Nationals on Sunday after a streak of unexpected losses put them outside of the final four. The team, which was ranked first coming into the event, was disappointed in their performance, but turned quickly around to looking forward to the fleet racing championship to be held in the coming four days.
The team of seniors Malcolm Lamphere and KB Knapp, junior Nic Baird, sophomore Graceann Nicolosi, and first years Shawn Harvey and Claudia Loiacono finished the regatta with and overall record of 14 wins and 8 losses, coming three losses short of what would eventually be the winning record. The College of Charleston defended their victory this year in a very similar set of conditions to those found at last year's nationals. Steady winds above ten knots with some current.
Though a bit frustrated with the end result, the team is motivated to have a great showing at the coed finals on Thursday and Friday, where the breeze looks to be very light and marginal. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the semi finals, a regatta which qualifies teams into the finals, but does not count for anything. The top nine teams qualify into the finals from each division, so for many of the top teams this is simply a warm-up before the big event.
