NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Last Wednesday, senior Joe Castaldi and junior Vinny Lally of the Yale baseball team made the trip to Wallingford’s Evarts C. Stevens Elementary School to speak with third through fifth graders during National School Lunch Week. The day’s program focused on the importance of pairing healthy eating habits with an active lifestyle.
The two Bulldogs’ pitchers arrived in time to cheer as the
entire school participated in an obstacle course. Also traversing
the course was Wallingford’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr.
Salvatore Menzo.
After completing the course, students filed inside for an assembly,
where after a quick break for healthy snacks and water, groups
performed skits promoting healthy food choices. Following this,
Castaldi, the Bulldogs’ team captain, and Lally addressed the
school in an assembly, stressing the importance of physical
exercise and healthy eating. They also explained the importance of
sleeping and eating right to improved study habits and school
success. With representatives from the Northeast Regional USDA in
attendance, the day was the culmination of a week’s worth of
planning through the local school district.
Yale Athletics would like to thank Sharlene Wong ‘80 for
inviting the student-athletes to participate in the celebration at
E.C. Stevens School.
