Bats Power Xavier To Win Over Yale
Eight-Run Fifth Inning Sends Bulldogs To Second Loss Of Season
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The spring trip to Florida in 2010 resulted in a 6-3-1 start for the Yale University baseball team. The 2011 RussMatt Invitational has not been as kind to the Bulldogs early on.
Following a season-opening loss to Lehigh, the Bulldogs took on Xavier Sunday and the Musketeers' bats took control of the game early.
Using an eight-run fifth inning, Xavier jumped out to a 17-0 lead before Yale could begin to generate some offense, but the Musketeers held on for a 17-6 victory at Henley Field in the Bulldogs' second game of the RussMatt Invitational.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-2 on the season. Xavier improved to 4-6.
The Musketeers scored a run in the first, second and fourth innings to jump out to an early 3-0 lead, but the floodgates opened in the fifth inning allowing Xavier to put the game out of Yale's reach. The Musketeers produced 10 hits in the inning, including a two-run homer by Bellamy, two triples and two doubles.
Xavier added five more runs in the sixth inning behind a grand slam from third baseman Patrick Paligraf.
The Musketeers added a final run in the eighth inning to open up a 17-0 lead and cap of their scoring. Xavier pounded out 26 hits in the game.
Xavier inserted its third pitcher into the game and that is where the Yale bats came alive. Shane Liska gave up back-to-back homers that led to four Yale runs in his only inning of work.
Cale Hanson went 3-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs. Andy Megee was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer that put Yale on the board in the eighth inning. Trey Rallis followed with a solo home run. Gant Elmore's two-run single in the ninth inning was the last run-scoring play for the Bulldogs. Elmore and Rallis both finished with two hits.
Yale junior pitcher Pat Ludwig started and pitched 4⅓ innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs, and was charged with the loss.
The Bulldogs return to action Monday with a pair of games in Winter Haven. Yale is scheduled to play Miami (Ohio) at 3 p.m. and Mt. St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
