Bulldogs Pound Out 13 hits in 9-3 Loss to Hoyas

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Yale University baseball team found a great deal of success at the plate in its second go-around with Georgetown, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs, that failed to result in enough runs to leave the diamond with the victory.

The Yale bats connected on 13 hits, but Georgetown scored nine runs on 10 hits to outlast the Bulldogs in a 9-3 decision at the RussMatt Invitational at Chain O'Lakes Park Friday night.

The first six players in the Bulldogs' lineup had multiple hits. Freshman David Toups went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore Cale Hanson was a perfect 3-for-3. Senior captain Ryan Brenner went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Josh Scharff and Kevin Fortunato each added two hits and an RBI. Freshman Joe Lubanski had a hit and an RBI.

Georgetown jumped on the Bulldogs in the first inning, scoring three runs on just one hit and four walks. Paul Bello provided the big hit for the Hoyas with a two-run single with two outs.

Yale bounced back with a pair of runs in the third inning. Brenner led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Fortunato. Toups, who reached base after he was hit by a pitch, scored on Lubanski's two-out single. But with the bases loaded, Cam Squires struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Georgetown found more success, scoring three runs on three hits and two Yale errors to take a 6-2 lead. Yale cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the seventh after Brenner led off the inning with a single, stole second, went to third on a single by Toups, and then scored on a fielder's choice by Scharff.

That was as close as the Bulldogs would get, however, as the Hoyas scored two in the bottom of the inning and another in the eighth to pull away with the 9-3 win.
