Breslow '02 and Red Sox head to World Series

BOSTON – On Saturday, Craig Breslow '02 became the first Yale alumnus since Ron Darling '82 to win a Championship Series and advance to the World Series. Breslow and the Boston Red Sox will face the St. Louis Cardinals starting on Wednesday.

The Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 to clinch the series on Saturday. Breslow pitched one scoreless inning, allowing no hits on one strikeout.

Breslow has been lights out this postseason. Through seven innings in as many games, he has allowed no runs on just three hits and six strikeouts. Except for closer Koji Uehara, he has been the most frequent reliever to come out of the bullpen for the Sox.

This October, Breslow was named as a nominee for the 49th annual Hutch Award, given to "a Major Leaguer who demonstrates the honor, courage and dedication exemplified by [Fred] Hutchinson." The winner will be announced on January 30th in Safeco Field in Seattle. Breslow is one of just ten nominees.

Yale head coach John Stuper has had his own share of postseason action, pitching a complete game in the 1982 World Series to help the St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Milwaukee Brewers. Now that his former team is facing Breslow's Red Sox, Stuper is conflicted.

"This is a matchup I really hoped would not happen. It is going to be like my family playing against my son," said Stuper.

When asked to predict the outcome of the Series, Stuper refused. "I'm not even sure I'll be able to watch. I am a Cardinal till the day I die, and Craig pitched for me. Maybe I'll just watch Law and Order reruns instead!"
