Scott Politz tossed eight solid innings and six different Bulldogs had at least one hit in a 3-1 Yale season-opening win at New Mexico State on Friday night in Las Cruces, N.M.

Politz, a first-team all-Ivy selection last year, allowed one run, five hits and struck out five without walking a batter to earn the victory.  He retired the first six Aggies he faced before surrendering a run-scoring ground out in the third.

Griffin Dey homered for the Bulldogs to tie the game 1-1 in the fourth.  Dey's solo shot was the second homer of his Yale career.

The game remained tied until the seventh, when the Bulldogs scored twice.  Derek Brown led off with a walk and Andrew Herrera followed with a single.

Dai Dai Otaka executed a sacrifice bunt to move Brown and Herrera into scoring position.  Tim DeGraw grounded out to second to plate Brown and deliver the go-ahead run.  Herrera later scored on a wild pitch.

New Mexico State (6-5) had one-out singles in the seventh and eighth, but Politz worked out of both innings,  Politz struck out the next two batters in the seventh and induced two straight fly outs in the eighth.

Mason Kukowski pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save for the Bulldogs.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern time.  Tyler Duncan is scheduled to start game one for the Bulldogs and Eric Brodkowitz is slated for game two.
