Bulldogs Split With Albany Again

March 26, 2006
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Bulldogs scored five runs in their half of the fifth inning to key a 7-5 victory in the front end of a doubleheader split with the Albany Great Danes on Sunday afternoon. Four Elis picked up two hits including Marc Sawyer (Largo, Fla.), who went five for seven on the day.
After four scoreless innings in game one, Yale exploded for five runs in the fifth, sending 10 men to the plate. The Bulldogs picked up six hits in the inning, including a two-run double from P.J. Gorynski (Queens, N.Y.). Sawyer, Josh Cox (Gainesville, Fla.) and Justin Ankney (Ft. Myers, Fla.) also had run-scoring hits in the frame.
Albany responded for a pair in the bottom of the inning and the teams exchanged runs in the sixth to send the game into the seventh with Yale leading 6-3.
Yale tacked on an insurance run in the top of the inning on a Ryan Lavarnway (Woodland Hills, Calif.) RBI single to go up 7-3.
The Great Danes rallied in their last at bat, scoring twice to knock reliever Matt Fealey (Queens, N.Y) out of the game after pitching one and a third innings.
Brett Rosenthal (Irving, Texas) entered the game and got out of the jam to earn the save, his sixth of the season. He is just two saves shy of the Yale single-season mark of eight, set by Pablo Munez in 1988. Mike Mongiardini (1-1) (Toms River, N.J.) picked up the win. It was his first start in the last 16 days.
Game two was all Albany as the Great Danes wasted no time in scoring four runs in the first.
The Bulldogs cut the lead in half in the second, scoring a pair on a John Janco (Cannonsburg, Pa.) homer.
Albany, however, responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning before blowing the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. The key hit of the inning was a bases-clearing triple from Sean Donovan.
Yale did score a pair in the sixth on a two run single from Jake Doyle (Wilmington, De.) but the Great Danes finished strong, scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth inning.
Nick Murphy (1-3) picked up his first win of the season while John Hollis (3-1) (Jacksonville, Fla.) was saddled with the loss.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, when they tangle with in-state rivals UConn in Storrs. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
