Yale Sweeps Brown on Senior Day

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Alec Smith and Jon Hollis pitched complete-game victories as the Yale baseball team defeated Brown 5-2 in the opener and 6-3 in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader on Senior Day at Yale Field on Friday afternoon. Senior Randy Leonard had four hits, four runs scored and reached base in all seven of his plate appearances in his final home contests for the Bulldogs. Yale freshman Marc Sawyer went 2-for-6 with three RBI on the day.
In game one, Leonard belted a one-out triple to right center and scored on a wild pitch to give Yale a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the third as Marc Sawyer doubled home Justin Ankney and advanced Leonard to third. Matt Stone grounded out to score Leonard and give the Bulldogs a 3-0 edge.
Justin Ankney went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for Yale, while Jeff Nichols went 2-for-2.
Smith (6-3) allowed one earned run and five hits in the seven-inning contest. Shaun McNamara (4-2) took the loss, giving up four earned runs in six innings.
In the nightcap, Hollis (4-3) threw a bases-loaded wild pitch in the first to give Brown a 1-0 advantage, however settled down afterwards, surrendering two runs the rest of the way and without allowing a hit after the sixth. Hollis gave up two earned runs and struck out four in a nine-inning performance.
Yale responded with two in the second, as Stone lifted a sac-fly to center to score Ankney and Jake Doyle singled home Leonard, who had two stolen bases in game two, to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs (18-19, 10-8 Ivy) scored four more runs in the second, as Sawyer smashed a bases-loaded double down the left field line to score two runs, then Stone followed with an RBI single and Doyle had a sac-fly to give Yale 6-1 lead.
Bobby Deeb went 2-for-5 and scored a run in game two for Brown. James Cramphin (2-5) took the complete-game loss for the Bears (14-24, 8-10 Ivy).
In between games, the Yale honored five seniors. Leonard, the team captain, along with Kyle Misenti, Doug Shimokawa, Chris Young and team manger Kyle Cousin. The Bulldogs close out their season tomorrow at Brown in Providence, R.I., for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
