April 21, 2009
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - With a four-game Ivy League finale against Brown on the horizon, the Yale baseball team looks to pick up some momentum going into the weekend series as it makes a short trip up I-91 for a Wednesday contest at the University of Hartford (7-22, 1-6 America East). First pitch in the single, nine-inning contest is slated for 3:30 p.m. The Bulldogs enter the contest at 12-20 in the 2009 season.
Senior centerfielder Stefan Schropp and freshman shortstop Matt Schmidt each enter the contest with the Hawks on five-game hitting streaks. Schropp, the captain of the Bulldogs, is hitting .556 (10-for-18) over the five-game span with a home run, seven runs batted in and six runs scored. Schmidt has posting a .455 (5-for-11) batting average and a .533 on-base percentage over the last five games. He has hit two doubles, driven in two runs and scored six times in that stretch.
Overall in the 2009 season, junior first baseman Trygg Larsson-Danforth has been the big hitter in the Elis' lineup. The 6'6 lefty is hitting for a team-best .351 average and also leads the squad in home runs (six), runs batted in (32), runs scored (25), total bases (65), slugging percentage (.570) and on-base percentage (.427).
After the mid-week contest, Ivy League foe Brown comes to Yale Field on Saturday for a noon doubleheader, and the squads then head to Providence for another noon twin bill on Sunday to close out the 2009 regular season.
