Quinnipiac Defeats Yale to Win City Series

Sept. 29, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--For the second straight year, Yale and Quinnipiac met in the championship game of the Fall City Series at Yale Field. For the second straight year, the Bobcats came out on top. Behind seven innings of one-hit shutout ball from MVP Tyler Brett, Quinnipiac posted a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon to win the Elm City's annual showcase. In the consolation game, Southern Connecticut State defeated the University of New Haven 8-2.

Quinnipiac got on the board with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third (despite the game being played at Yale's home field, the home team was determined by coin toss). Mickey Amanti reached on an error leading off the inning, and came around on Ben Farina's triple. Farina later scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded.

That was more than Brett needed. Yale's only hit off the Quinnipiac starter was an Andrew Moore double with one out in the top of the second. Brett retired seven in a row at one point, and left the game after tallying three strikeouts and four walks in seven innings.

The Bobcats added insurance in the bottom of the seventh, bringing across three more runs. Brian Monack walked and John Delaney singled to start the inning. After Pete Kummerfeldt struck out, Bryn Doyle's single knocked in both base runners. Doyle moved to third on an error and scored on Jeff Couch's sacrifice fly.

Yale got on the board in the top of the eighth when P.J. Gorynski singled, moved to second on a fielder's choice, and scored when Ryan Lavarnway reached on an error. The Bulldogs added another run in the ninth. Yale loaded the bases after Stefan Schropp, Andrew Kolmar and Trygg Larsson-Danforth roped three straight singles to start the inning. Schropp scored on a passed ball to account for the final score.

Freshman lefty Vinny Lally got the start for the Bulldogs. He took the loss in his Yale debut, giving up two hits and two unearned runs while striking out four and walking two in three innings. Chris Finneran, Alex Christ and Chris Walsh all pitched scoreless innings of relief before John Henry Davis got touched up during that three-run seventh. Steve Gilman pitched the eighth.

Gant Elmore had the Bulldogs' only other hit. Four of Yale's five hits came in the final two innings off Bobcat reliever Eric Bretscher. Farina was the only player with a multi-hit game for Quinnipiac. The Bobcats smacked seven hits as a team.

Yale begins the 2008 regular season with a three-game series at George Washington March 1-2.
