Bulldogs Face Charlotte, Elon At Hofstra In Continuation Of NIT Season Tip-Off

Yale Plays At 4:30 Both Monday & Tuesday Of Next Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The continuation of the NIT Season Tip-Off will be a homecoming for the three members of the Yale men's basketball family with Long Island ties. The Bulldogs will head to Hofstra's Mack Sports Complex to face Charlotte on Monday and Elon on Tuesday. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.

Junior Michael Sands of Franklin Square, N.Y., played at Carey High School where he was named the conference and Nassau County Player of the Year as a senior. Sophomore Brian Katz is from Woodbury, N.Y., and was the Long Island Catholic League Player of the Year as a senior at St. Dominic High School. In addition, James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Men's Basketball at Yale, is a Long Island native. He is a 1982 graduate of Half Hollow Hills High West.

Charlotte (2-1) beat Elon 75-61 in the opening round of the NIT before dropping a 101-59 decision to Duke. Shamari Spears leads the team in scoring (21.5 ppg.).

Yale and Charlotte are playing for only the second time. The 49ers edged the Bulldogs 80-74 at the 2004 Cable Car Classic.

Elon (1-2) has three players averaging in double figures, led by Josh Bonney (16.7 ppg.).

Yale is playing the Phoenix for the first time.

The Bulldogs still have one piece of important business before they can turn their attention to the NIT. They play Quinnipiac in their home opener on Saturday night. Tipoff at the John J. Lee Amphitheater is slated for 7 p.m.
