Jones To Participate In Playing Hoops With Heroes Event In NYC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Men's Basketball at Yale, will take part in a very special event this week. Jones will coach the New York Fire Department team in the Playing Hoops With Heroes Tournament on Thursday at John Jay College in New York City.

Playing Hoops With Heroes is a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in support of 2014 NYC Fleet Week festivities and to benefit the Bob Woodruff Foundation and USO Metropolitan NY.

The tournament will feature stars from the United States Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps, Coast Guard, NY Fire and NY Police Departments and the NY Port Authority.

Each team will have NCAA Coach Support and ESPN, CBS and NBC personalities will be adding commentary throughout the games.

In addition, the coaching staffs will take a pier visit to the ships and interact with the service men and women and participate in a Bike Build where they will help build bicycles for the sailors to bring home to their children.

The basketball begins at 4 p.m. with the eight teams playing a double elimination 3-on-3 tournament.

At 6 p.m. the coaching staffs will eat with the more than 200 active duty military in attendance.
