Meet The Class of 2018 – Landon Russell

James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Men's Basketball, will welcome four freshmen to campus this fall. Eric Anderson, Sem Kroon, Makai Mason and Landon Russell bring strong credentials to New Haven. Over the next week, yalebulldogs.com will spotlight the newcomers. Today, meet Landon Russell from Fort Worth, Texas.

Before Yale: TAPPS (largest private school association in Texas) first team all-state selection as a senior at Nolan Catholic High School… District Offensive Player of the Year… Three-time first team all-district selection… Averaged 18.2 points, four assists, 3.5 rebounds and two steals per game as a senior… Shot 84 percent from the free throw line as a junior which led all private schools in Texas… Helped Nolan Catholic reach the championship game of the state tournament as a junior where it lost in overtime to a team led by recent NBA lottery pick Julius Randle…Played for FV 5:17 and Texas Select AAU teams…With the Select, started alongside point guard Emmanuel Mudiay, ESPN's No. 5 ranked recruit who is heading to SMU.

Personal: Volunteered at Mission Arlington, a local food bank… Grandfather attended Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, graduating in 1955… Father was born in New Haven… Son of Karen and Greg Russell.

Why Yale? "Because I felt that it presented an unmatched variety of opportunities and also opened many new doors. I love the idea of receiving a world class education while also being able to play Division I basketball at a high level. I really like the coaching staff and feel very comfortable at Yale."

Jones On Russell: "Landon is a great shooter with great ball skills which will give him the opportunity to play the point guard and shooting guard positions."
