Club Boats Place in Top 10 on Charles
BOSTON – From BU Bridge to Eliot Bridge, warm weather and minimal wind made for some great racing from Yale's heavyweight crews at the 47th Head of the Charles Regatta. On the first day of competition Yale had two boats entered, a club four and a club eight. The club four finished fourth out of 52 crews with a time of 17:18.17. The club eight finished sixth out of 42 crews with a time of 15:49.70.
Yale's club four started fourth in what is generally one of the regatta's larger fields of competition. The Bulldogs posted a faster split time passing by Riverside Boat Club than did Peterborough Rowing Club, the winners of last year's club four event. Coming past Cambridge Boat Club, Yale clocked in a full second faster than Harvard, but the Crimson rallied on their home course to take that second back in the final stretch. In the end the Bulldogs finished according to their bow number, fourth. The event was won by Don Rowing Club with a time of 16:34.55, followed by University Barge Club in second and the crew from Harvard in third.
In the club eight, Yale started in fifth position. Past Riverside the Bulldogs had the second fastest time, and past Weld they were fourth. By the finish the Bulldogs dropped back one spot from where they had started, finishing sixth in a closely contested field. A crew from Brown clocked in first at 15:20.88, with Princeton only 0.11% off of Brown's time in second with 15:21.85. Less than thirty seconds separated Yale in sixth from Brown's winning time, and fifteen crews finished within one minute of the winning time.
The championship four will race tomorrow afternoon at 2:24 p.m., followed by Yale's championship eight at 2:45 p.m. A live webcast will from the rooftop of the Cambridge Boat Club will begin at approximately 8:00 a.m. is available here.
