Heavyweights Host Dartmouth for Olympic Axe
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale heavyweight crew team will have its first of two home races this Saturday, racing against Dartmouth for the Olympic Axe. This is the second race of the season for the heavyweights and the first in a trio of dual races that will fall on back-to-back weekends.
Yale's season opener took place against Brown two weeks ago. In three out of four races the Bulldogs fell to the Bears, each time with Yale giving up an early lead and Brown pulling though to win by a slim margin and defend its home course. Yale's four was the only crew to pull out a win, but this time with the home advantage belonging to the Bulldogs all of Yale's crews will be looking to put a win on the board.
"It's great to be getting into the thick of the dual season," said senior captain Jon Morgan. "The team is in great shape and we are looking forward to solid racing this weekend."
Dartmouth opened its season last weekend in Worcester, Mass., against Columbia, Holy Cross and MIT. In all three eights the Big Green finished second behind Columbia and ahead of Holy Cross. Dartmouth's four triumphed over MIT's four.
Yale has not lost this race since the two schools began racing for the trophy in 2004. On Saturday, Yale will draw on its pool of international talent in hopes of keeping the Olympic Axe for another year.
The heavyweights are the only team racing at home this weekend. The order of events is as follows:
Coxswains and Coaches Meeting – 7:45 a.m.
3V8 – 9:00 a.m.
JV8 – 9:20 a.m.
1V8 – 9:40 a.m.
V4+ – 10:00 a.m.
Yale's Gilder Boathouse is located at 280 Roosevelt Drive in Derby, Conn. Directions can be found here. A spectator bus will depart from Payne Whitney Gymnasium at 8:20 a.m.
