Spectator Bus Leaves PWG at 7:45 a.m. for Last Home Race
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the last home race of the season the Yale heavyweight crew team will take on Cornell and Princeton for the Carnegie Cup this Saturday. The Bulldogs are coming off two successful weekends of racing, defending the Olympic Axe against Dartmouth and the Blackwell Cup against Columbia and Penn with wins in the varsity eight. This race will mark the last race before the Eastern Sprints, as well as the last race on the Housatonic River for the team's six seniors.
This past Saturday saw some intense racing on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia for the Blackwell Cup. The Bulldog varsity eight showed lots of speed in the second half of the race, pulling away from Columbia to win by open water. The four also won its race with a strong showing against Penn's four, and the second and third varsity eights each missed out on first place in their races by one second or less.
The Carnegie Cup was the only trophy to elude the Bulldogs in the early season dual races last year. Yale swept its first three races of the season but in its fourth the varsity eight lost to both Cornell and Princeton. The JV and freshman eights both finished second, however, to edge out Princeton as Cornell defended its home course.
This year the race is at home for the Bulldogs, as it was three years ago when Yale last won this matchup. In 2011 at Princeton the Tigers won this race, and again Cornell won it last year in Ithaca. If the Bulldogs can capture the Carnegie Cup it will go a long way towards favorable seedings next month in Worcester at the Eastern Sprints.
As was the case two weeks ago against Dartmouth, the heavyweights will be the only team racing at home this weekend. The order of events is as follows:
7:15 a.m. – Coxswain Meeting
8:30 a.m. – 1V
8:50 a.m. – JV
9:10 a.m. – 3V
9:30 a.m. – 4V (Cornell and Princeton only)
Yale's Gilder Boathouse is located at 280 Roosevelt Drive in Derby, Conn. Directions can be found here. A spectator bus will depart from Payne Whitney Gymnasium at 7:45 a.m.
