Heavyweights Head to Princeton for Carnegie Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn- This weekend the heavyweight crew will head down to Princeton, N.J., to race Cornell and Princeton for the Carnegie Cup.  The Elis are coming off a successful day of racing last weekend when they retained the Blackwell Cup, beating Penn and Columbia in two out of the three races of day.  This will be the final race for the Bulldogs before a three-week break from racing preceding the Eastern Sprints.  The team will make the trip down to New Jersey tomorrow and take a light row to test out the course in Princeton. On the morning Saturday, Apr. 26th, the three teams will face off for the prize.

The Bulldogs are heading into this weekend with a solid foundation of work in their spring season so far.  The varsity has been undefeated and the second and third boats both sit with two wins and a loss.  This past weekend, the first and third varsities were able to win shirts and from both the Quakers and the Lions, with the second varsity crossing the line two and a half seconds after Penn took the race. Yale has now won the trophy five years in a row, and the seniors have had their last race on the Housatonic.

Princeton is coming off of a frustrating weekend of racing, falling to Harvard by a second or less in three out of four races on the day.  The Tigers' third boat was able to edge out the Crimson.  Also last weekend, Cornell's first boat finished first over Navy and Syracuse, with their second and third boats finishing in second and third place respectively. This weekend will certainly bring a good test of speed for the Bulldogs, who are yet to have travelled to a race this spring.

"We are really excited about the race this weekend," said senior Owen Symington.  "The varsity is looking forward to a hard close race where we really can drop the leash and see our top end speed. We feel really good about this past week of training because the conditions have been challenging, but we believe it has only made us better. All the crews are looking to go and win some shirts."

Junior Will Rosenbloom, who will race in the third varsity echoed those sentiments. "I can only speak of my boat, but we're going into this weekend really confident following a good week of training and our last week of racing. We've only raced at home so far and need the opportunity to race strong opponents on the road before our championship racing.  Moreover, it may be nice to get on a bus away from New Haven for a bit of racing."

The Bulldogs race Saturday, April 26th in Princeton, N.J., with races starting at nine in the morning.  You can watch them live here.
