Bulldogs Take Sixth At National Championship

WEST WINDSOR, N.J.- The Yale heavyweight men finished sixth in the grand final of the varsity eight event earlier today at the IRA National Championship.  It was the first time the boat had made the grand final at the championship regatta since 2006.  The second and third varsity came in fourth and second in their petit finals, finishing 10th and eighth overall, respectively.

The varsity finished the course in 5:51.7, behind UW, Brown, Cal, Princeton and Harvard.  Last year the varsity boat finished seventh overall, winning the petit final.  There were 24 boats entered in the event.

"While getting sixth was disappointing, this was the first time that Yale's varsity eight has made the grand final since 2006," said senior Zachary Johnson.

"I'm proud of all the guys," echoed sophomore David DeVries. "We fought hard but unfortunately came up short.  However, it doesn't take away from the improved results across the board for our whole team."

The second varsity finished fourth in its petit final, for tenth overall in its event with a field of 24.  Last year the heavyweights finished 11th overall in the second varsity event.  It crossed the finish line with a time of 6:00.4, beating out Penn and Oregon State.

The third varsity came in second place in its petit final, finishing eighth overall in a field of 18, with a time of 5:56.8.  The boat finished in front of Navy, Dartmouth, Syracuse and Penn.  The heavyweights did not compete in the third varsity event at IRAs last year.

"We are all looking forward to our last race against Harvard on the seventh [of June]," said Johnson.

This marks the beginning of the last week the heavyweights will spend training together in their normal racing season.  The spring season, which is now near its end, has been marked by consistent improvement in results when compared with last year.  After winning all of its dual-season races, the varsity earned places higher than last year at both Eastern Sprints and the National Championships.  The second and third varsity also showed improvement across the board.

The entire team will return to Gales Ferry to prepare for its final races, the 149th rowing of The Race against Harvard on June 6 and 7 in New London, Conn.
