Yale-Cal Matchup For Title

Yale Lineup

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The first half of the Yale heavyweight crew's defense of the San Diego Crew Classic Championship was a success today as the varsity boat easily won its semifinal heat on Mission Bay.

The Elis (5:42.75), who put forth a consistent and potentially conservative race in qualifying for Sunday's grand final, finished more than a length ahead of Stanford (5:46.48). The University of Victoria was third.

Rowing out of lane one along the shore of the bay, the Bulldogs's top boat steadily built a lead and then took open water by 1,000 meters. Stanford fought back to make it closer at the finish, but the Elis were clearly in cruise control at that point.

The grand final is set for 1:24 PM ET on Sunday and can be seen live on the San Diego Crew Classic website through youtube.com. The Bulldogs will be squaring off against the University of California-Berkeley for the Copley Cup title. The Blue snapped Cal's three-year win streak in 2016.

Cal (5:42.08) won the other collegiate varsity eight heat by more than three boat lengths over Michigan RA with  UC-Santa Barbara a close third.

The Bulldogs (5:54.88) and Bears (5:50.33) had the same succes in the JV heats. Both took the top spots and will meet in a Sunday finale.
