ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Yale's heavyweight crews split up this weekend to race on two rivers: the Genesee and the Housatonic. While crews brought home medals from both regattas, the weekend served mainly to get good racing experience in and to test lineups before this weekend's Head of the Charles and the Princeton Chase on Oct. 26.
The top three varsity boats made the seven-hour drive to Rochester, N.Y. to race at the Head of the Genesee. The regatta's format was new for most Yale's oarsmen: it consisted of a 5000-meter head style race followed by a 1500-meter sprint alongside another crew. The time for the sprint was multiplied by three and added to the longer piece's time. Rankings were determined by the combined times.
Yale's first and second varsity boats raced in the men's open eight. The varsity finished the head race in a time of 15:15.05, placing them in third behind both Brown eights. The second varsity finished 6th in the head race with a time of 15:49.37. Ahead of them and after the Yale varsity were two crews from the University of Western Ontario.
The third varsity broke up into even boats and raced in the men's open four. In the head race, they finished second and third (17:11.51, 17:20.87). Brown, which stacked its fours, finished first and fourth (16.55:52, 17:50.98).
The Yale varsity completed the 1500-meter sprint in a time of 4:25.87 resulting in a weighted time of 13:17.61. Yale's second varsity finished in 4:28.06 (13:24.18). These weighted times were then added to the head race times to produce the following final results:
1. Brown 1V - 28:02.08
2. Brown 2V - 28:20.32
3. Yale 1V - 28:32.66
4. Western Ontario 1V - 28:40.40
5. Western Ontario 2V - 28:56.39
6. Yale 2V - 29:13.55
The Yale third varsity fours finished their 1500-meter pieces in 4:56.81 (14:50.43) and 4:59.28 (14:57.84). The first Brown four finished in 4:54.17 and the second in 5:11.47. Adding the weighted times to the head race times gave the following standings:
1. Brown A - 31:38.03
2. Yale A - 32:01.94
3. Yale B - 32:18.71
4. Brown B - 33.25.39
Back in Connecticut, Yale's freshmen and fourth varsity raced at the 14th annual Head of the Housatonic. The regatta, hosted by the New Haven Rowing Club on Yale's home course, consisted of one head style piece.
The Yale fourth varsity raced in the men's collegiate eight. They finished 5th in the event with a time of 13:52.57. Ahead of them, in ascending order, were the Yale lightweight second varsity, the Trinity varsity, the Yale lightweight varsity, and the New York Athletic Club. The NYAC won the even in 12:53.64.
The Yale freshmen broke down and raced in the men's collegiate four. They finished second and 6th in this event. The Yale lightweight four, consisting of the program's top four rowers, won the even. The top six were as follows:
1. Yale Varsity Lightweights A - 14:18.9
2. Yale Freshmen Heavyweights A - 14:40.16
3. Yale Varsity Lightweights B - 14:46.5
4. Marist College Varsity A - 14:53.13
5. Dowling College Varsity - 14:56.86
6. Yale Freshmen Heavyweights B - 15:01.614
The coming week will be one of intense preparation for Yale's heavyweights. The Bulldogs are sending a championship eight, a championship four and a club four to the Head of the Charles on Oct. 18 and 19.
