No. 2 Yale Ready for Doubleheader

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After last week's victory against Georgetown and MIT, the No. 2 Yale lightweight crew team faces a pair of trials this Saturday. In the morning, the Bulldogs will race Penn and Columbia on Overpeck Lake in Ridgefield Park, N.J. for the Dodge Cup before meeting Cornell in the afternoon on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. Yale has held onto the Dodge Cup in 32 of the last 34 years, including the last eight years.

Last weekend, Yale swept Georgetown and MIT on the Charles River in Boston. In the third varsity race, Yale posted a 7.7-second margin on MIT. In the first freshmen race, Yale won by 13.5 seconds. In the second varsity race, Yale won by 17.6 seconds. Finally, in the closest race of the day, the first varsity race, Yale prevailed by 1.9 seconds.

Columbia raced last weekend against Navy. In the varsity race the Lions defeated the Midshipmen by 14.2 seconds. However, Columbia fell in the other three races. In the second varsity race the Lions lost by 2.3 seconds. In the first and second freshmen race, Columbia lost by 0.4 and 22.9 seconds respectively.

Cornell and Penn raced against each other last weekend along with Harvard. Cornell and Penn fell in the first varsity race to Harvard by 6.3 and 19.1 seconds respectively. Cornell won both the second and third varsity races, posting 19.7 and 29.9-second victories over Penn respectively. Harvard won the first freshmen race, winning by 4.2 and 8.7 seconds over Cornell and Penn, as well as the second freshmen race, which it won by 38.9 seconds over Cornell.

In the races last year, Yale swept an abbreviated Dodge Cup regatta. The third varsity and first freshmen races were cancelled due to the poor conditions. Against Cornell, Yale won the varsity race, the third varsity race, as well as the first freshmen race, falling in only the second varsity race.
