Lightweights Look to Reclaim Durand Cup
NEW HAVEN, Conn – The No. 2 Yale lightweight crew team will host No. 5 Dartmouth this Saturday, Apr. 20. The crews will race on Yale's home course on the Housatonic River, in Derby, Conn. At stake will be the Durand Cup, which has been awarded to the winner of this race annually since 1958. Yale will look to regain the cup, as it has fallen to Dartmouth for the past two years.
Last week, Yale successfully completed a double header, winning six of nine over two days. On Saturday, against Columbia and Penn, the Yale first varsity, second varsity and third varsity four all finished ahead of their opponents. The varsity was locked in a close race against Columbia, but pulled ahead to win by 5.9 seconds and claim the Dodge Cup. Similar racing followed on Sunday against Cornell. The varsity eight rowed a rhythmic piece, winning by 3.7 seconds. The first freshmen and third varsity four were also victorious.
At last year's regatta, Yale won three of four races, but failed to reclaim the Durand Cup, losing in the varsity race by 5.5 seconds. Yale finished ahead in the second varsity, third varsity four and first freshmen races. Last weekend, Dartmouth was swept by Harvard, with its varsity losing to Harvard by 3.9 seconds.
