  • Segal to Represent Canada at U-23 World Championships
    July 09, 2014
    Rising junior and lightweight oarsman Matthew Segal is set to compete for Canada at the U-23 World Rowing Championships in Verese, Italy, after being selected to the men’s lightweight four. Segal, a member of last season’s first varsity eight that finished second at Eastern Sprints, will be joined by Cameron Howie (Princeton ’16), Samuel Frum (Harvard ’16) and Lucas Farewell (Harvard ’16).
  • Six Bulldogs Earn IRA All-Academic Honors

    Six members of Yale lightweight crew received IRA All-Academic Honors Monday. According to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association, recognized athletes must have “completed one full year at his or her respective institution; maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.35 or higher; earn an institutional letter; [and] compete at the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta.”
  • Bulldogs to Represent US at U-23 World Championships

    Departing seniors Josh Mann and Matthew O’Donoghue will represent the United States at the 2014 U-23 World Championships in Varese, Italy next month, in the flagship lightweight event: the lightweight 4-. Both were selected to the boat after a successful selection camp process which concluded last week.
  • Cecil Elected 2014-2015 Captain

    Yale lightweight crew has elected Matthew Cecil as its captain for the 2014-2015 season. Cecil, who sat in four seat of the second varsity eight that finished fourth at Eastern Sprints, succeeds Matthew O’Donoghue as captain of the Y150.

    It was a tough day of racing for the lightweights Sunday, as the varsity eight finished fourth at the IRA National Championships. The day started promisingly after the boat won its morning heat, but this momentum did not carry over to the final as the Elis found themselves off the pace. The race brings to an end the Bulldogs’ spring season.
  • Lightweights Prepare for IRAs

    Yale lightweight crew closes its season Sunday with the 112th IRA National Championship Regatta. The No. 2 Bulldogs enter the race after a second place finish at the Eastern Sprints two weeks ago, where they fell to Cornell by under a second. With momentum building, the Elis look to recapture the national title for the first time since 2011. The regatta will take place on Mercer Lake, in West Windsor, N.J., from May 30-June 1, with lightweight races confined to its final day.
  • Bulldogs Earn All-Ivy Honors

    The nine members of the Yale lightweight varsity eight earned second team All-Ivy recognition by placing second at the Eastern Sprints last Sunday. The crew is back in action on June 1, in the IRA National Championship, as it seeks to win Yale’s first national championship since 2011.

    It was a successful day on Lake Quinsigamond for the Y150, as all crews clocked strong performances and improved on their seedings. The Yale third varsity eight got things underway with a silver medal finish, a performance that was followed by a silver medal in the first varsity eight. The results put Yale in contention to win a third straight Jope Cup, but Cornell’s victory in the first varsity edged the Big Red narrowly ahead of the second place Bulldogs.
  • Bulldogs Ready for Sprints

    Yale lightweight crew is back in action this weekend, as it contests its first post-season contest: the Eastern Sprints. Held Sunday, May 18th, on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., the Sprints promises to bring close contests at all levels. The race marks the end of the season for much of the crew, with only select oarsmen competing at the IRA National Championship on June 1.
  • Elis Fall Short in Boston

    It was a difficult day on the Charles for Yale Lightweight Crew, as all crews were defeated by either Harvard or Princeton. Battling poor conditions and tough opposition, the Elis were unable to meet the weekend’s objectives. The race brings to an end the Bulldog’s regular season. The crew now gears up for the post-season: the Eastern Sprints will be held in Worcester, Mass., on May 18th, followed by the IRA National Championships in Mercer, N.J., on June 1st.
  • No. 2 Bulldogs Ready for No. 5 Harvard, No. 4 Princeton

    After a successful day on their home course last Saturday, the lightweights travel to Boston, Mass., this weekend for the annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton regatta. The Bulldogs enter the race ranked second, after a narrow defeat to Cornell two weeks ago; the Tigers are ranked fourth and the Crimson, fifth. With victory in the first varsity event, the Elis would win back the Goldthwait Cup: a trophy that has eluded them since 2006. Also contested will be the Vogel Cup, a team championship trophy, which Harvard has won for four straight seasons.
  • Yale Retains Durand, Joy Cups

    Yale lightweight crew bounced back from last weekend’s defeat with a sweep of Dartmouth and MIT Saturday. In the day’s early racing, the Bulldogs earned victory in the first, second and third varsity eights to win their second successive Durand Cup against the Big Green; later that afternoon, the Engineers fell to strong performances across the Yale ranks in the Joy Cup. All crews enjoyed good weather, close racing and fast conditions, as the Bulldogs made a strong statement in their final home races of the season.
  • Bulldogs Ready for Dartmouth, MIT

    Looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat against Cornell, the lightweights are back in action with another double header this Saturday against Dartmouth and MIT. The Durand Cup, contested between Yale and Dartmouth since 1958, begins at 8:40 a.m. in Derby— after it was relocated from Hanover, N.H., due to poor course conditions. Later on Saturday, Yale squares off against MIT in the Joy Cup.

    It was a tough day of racing for the Y150 on their home course Sunday, as Yale were swept by Cornell. The defeats brought to an end Yale’s undefeated record in the first and second varsity eights. The Elis look to bounce back next Saturday with another double header: away at Dartmouth in the morning before traveling home to face MIT in the afternoon.

    Spurred on by strong home support, Yale Lightweight Crew delivered victories across the ranks against Georgetown on Saturday. A strong performance by the first freshmen eight set the tone for the day’s racing: their victory was followed by similar performances in the two varsity eights. Conditions were favorable, with a slight tailwind in the earlier races building throughout the day.

The two programs face off in the eleventh running of the Johnson Cup, awarded to the winner of the first varsity eight. The Bulldogs will be looking to capture their fourth straight Johnson Cup this weekend, to extend their overall lead in the event to seven to four.
  • Swartz To Compete in the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race

    Thomas Swartz ‘13, Yale lightweight crew alum and 2011 IRA National champion, has been selected to the Oxford Blue Boat set to compete in the 160th Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race on April 6, 2014. Swartz is the second lightweight alum to compete in the Boat Race in three years, after William Zeng ’11 competed for Oxford in the 158th edition of the historic contest.

    Yale Lightweight Crew opens their spring racing calendar next weekend with a season opener against Navy in Princeton, N.J., on March 29. After facing the Midshipmen in the Johnson Cup, the Elis then continue with races throughout April, before ending the season with the Eastern Sprints and IRA National Championships held in May and June, respectively.

    Yale’s Freshmen rowers capped a successful fall season for the program on Saturday, at the Green Monster regatta. The Bulldogs posted the fastest time among lightweights, beating the majority of heavyweight crews in the process. After strong team performances at the Head of the Charles and the Princeton Chase, the freshmen rowers went into the weekend looking to make their own mark-- something they certainly achieved.

It was a promising regatta for the team all round, with strong performances across the ranks. The result means that the crew ends the fall racing season on a high-- which will serve as encouragement for the upcoming months away from competition.

    It was a successful day of racing for the men’s lightweight crew team on Sunday, as five boats raced down the course at the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta. The regatta represented the first opportunity for the team to race against league competition. The team faced tough competition across all events, and learned a great deal ahead of the Princeton Chase, to be held on Lake Carnegie next Sunday.

    Yale lightweight crew travels to Boston, Mass., this Sunday for the 49th Head of the Charles Regatta. The regatta promises strong competition for all entries, and marks the first opportunity of the season for the Elis to face EARC competitors. The Bulldogs will be fielding four boats this weekend: two eights and two fours.

    The Yale lightweights had their first race of this season Saturday at the 19th Head of Housatonic Regatta. The Elis put on an strong showing at the local regatta, with impressive performances across the entire squad. Following the day’s racing, a gathering at the Gilder Boathouse took place in celebration of the recently successful campaign to endow the lightweight head coaching position.
