Head Coach Position Endowed

Card Now Y150 Alumni Head Coach

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A network of alumni spanning seven decades of Yale rowing have gotten together to endow the Yale University Lightweight Crew head coaching position. The new title, which Andy Card now carries, is Y150 Alumni Head Coach of Lightweight Crew.

The group of former Eli rowers, representing classes as early as 1953 and as recently as 2012, raised $1.5 million for the position. The campaign was kicked off in October 2012 by Dr. Steve Flagg '57, Andy Bacas '80 and Alec Ellison '84, and reached its $1.5 million goal through donations from roughly 100 alumni in a remarkable 10 months.

"Most Y150 alumni see their coach as the individual that helped them connect with the great tradition of Yale lightweight crew," said Bacas. "So as alumni we're thrilled to help the tradition of great Y150 coaches continue."

The lightweight crew alumni celebrate this milestone at the Gilder Boathouse on Oct. 12, 2013.

Card (in photo), Yale's head coach the last 24 years, is one of the country's most successful rowing coaches. His varsity boats have captured five Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, three Eastern Sprints titles and one Temple Cup Challenge at the Henley Royal Regatta. Under Card, the lightweights have also taken seven Jope Cups for overall supremacy at Sprints. His overall record in varsity racing is 159-43-1.
