DERBY, Conn. -- Freshmen lightweights will travel north to Hanover, N.H. this weekend for the Green Monster regatta. Held on Dartmouth's home course on the Connecticut River, the race will see two Yale freshmen eights compete against other league competition-- marking the last race of the fall season for the Y150.
The race has a different format than most on the fall calendar: while it is a head race, teams race mixed boats with the goal clocking the fastest aggregate time. This provides novice rowers with valuable experience as they continue to improve.
Last weekend, the freshmen opened their fall season at the Princeton Chase. They performed well, battling tough competition from both lightweights and heavyweight crews. Starting 16th, they finished 10th in the event-- fifth among lightweights. They will face many of the same teams again this weekend, and will be looking to improve on last week's performance.
Freshman William Van Fossen spoke of his excitement surrounding the upcoming race.
"I think it is going to be another close race," Van Fossen said. "We're fortunate to have another opportunity to test our speed."
Following the Green Monster, the lightweights will train away from competition. They will be back in action on March 29th, in their spring season opener against Navy.
