Bulldogs Sweep Quakers, Lions, Hoyas

April 14, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA - It was a busy day on the Schuylkill River for the Yale men's lightweight crew team on Saturday, but a successful one. In the morning the Bulldogs swept Penn and Columbia to retain the Dodge Cup and in the afternoon they swept Georgetown.

Shortly after 9 am, racing for the Dodge Cup got underway. The Bulldogs won by eight second margins in both of the first two races - the first freshman and second freshman eights. Yale's second varsity boat then achieved the greatest margin of victory of the morning, separating themselves from Penn by 23 seconds over the two kilometer course.

But in the fourth race, things weren't so easy. Yale's varsity eight went down to the wire with Columbia but managed to pull out a 1.5 second victory. Penn finished in third, almost 9 seconds behind Yale. The victory in the varsity eight race meant that the Dodge Cup would stay at Yale for the fourth year in a row. Since 1979, Yale has only lost the race twice. Finally, it was the turn of Yale's third fours to complete the sweep over Ivy competition and they did so in style, finishing first and second head of Columbia's boat.

Starting at 4 pm, the Bulldogs faced off against the Hoyas of Georgetown. The Elis won all their races in this afternoon session, with the Yale varsity eight winning by a margin of three seconds.

Next week, the Bulldogs will return to the friendly waters of the Housatonic to face Dartmouth and Rutgers. Yale will hope to win back the Durand Cup from the Scarlet Knights, who interrupted Yale's eleven year hold on the cup.
