Bulldogs Capture Durand Cup for Ninth Straight Year

April 24, 2004

The lightweight crew team added to its strong history of wins at the Durand Cup, capturing the cup for the ninth consecutive year by defeating Dartmouth and Rutgers at home on the Housatonic River in Derby, CT. The Elis have lost the Durand only twice in the past 25 years.

Racing with a strong tailwind, the Elis led the entire race, finishing with a time of 5:35.2. The Green came in at 5:39.1, while Rutgers brought up the rear with a time of 5:40.5.

"The racing season is so short and this was an excellent test," said Yale head coach Andy Card. "I am pleased with the way we got ahead early and were able to stay there. It was important for us to get a strong start and set the tone."

Yale's JV boat also won their race, finishing with a time of 5:44.7, and the 3rd Varsity Four and 1st Frosh Eight also earned first place in their respective races. Dartmouth defeated the 2nd Frosh Four to give Yale its only loss on the day.

The Elis will row against Cornell later today.
