Bulldogs Lift Goldthwait Cup

Bulldogs Lift Goldthwait Cup

April 29, 2006

DERBY, Conn. - The Yale men's lightweight crew team will be preparing for the championship regatta season in high spirits after victory Saturday morning in the Goldthwait Cup over Harvard and Princeton. This is the first time Yale has lifted the cup since 2002, putting an end to the Crimson's three-year streak.

The Bulldogs secured the cup after defeating Princeton and Harvard in the varsity eight race. Yale and Princeton pulled away from the outset, leaving Harvard a length behind at the halfway point. The Bulldogs held off the Tigers for the one-second victory. With the win Yale's varsity eight improves to a 7-2 record this spring.

Yale's 1st freshman boat also took first place in its race. Once again, the Bulldogs had the Tigers of Princeton close on their tail, but managed to pull away, winning by three seconds. The 1st freshman boat also has only two loss this season heading into Eastern Sprints.

Yale's three other boats all finished in second place. The junior varsity showed a valiant effort late on to beat out Princeton to second place by just one second after a slow start. Elsewhere, Yale's 3V and 2F boats kept things close against respective winners Princeton and Harvard.

The two wins and three second place finishes also helped Yale secure its second Vogel Cup. The Vogel Cup was inaugurated in 2002, and is awarded to the team with the highest points score in all its races. The Bulldogs finished with 40 points with Harvard and Princeton each scoring 22 points.

Saturday's race at Gilder Boathouse is the last time the Bulldogs will compete before heading to Eastern Sprints in three weeks time, where in 2005 the varsity eight finished second behind Harvard by just two tenths of a second.
