Two Yale Boats Win Heats At IRAs

CAMDEN, N.J. - Two Yale boats won heats on the opening day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on the Cooper River. The varsity pair of Roman Rezanowicz and Alexander Rothmeier captured Heat 3 with a time of 6:58.766, the fastest time of the three heats. The freshman four posted the second fastest time of the day in its event, winning Heat 3 in 6:58.766. In the boat for Yale were Noah McColl, Brendan McCook, Michael Jonas, Jeremy Hopkins and coxswain Stephen Dobeck.

Yale's second varsity had to race twice, but still earned a berth in Friday's semifinals. They finished fourth in Heat 2 with a time of 5:57.737 in the morning, but then came back to win repechage 1 in the afternoon. The Bulldogs completed the course in 5:50.279, nearly three second ahead of second-place Navy. In the boat for Yale were Foster Hays, Andrew Kaiser, Simon Goldman, Joseph Pappalardo, Peter Barkett, Brendan Stallard, Nathan Bruker, Philip Lang and coxswain Manuel Gonzales-Luna.

The varsity pair victory earned them a spot in Saturday's Grand Final, which is scheduled for 9:38 a.m. The freshman four will race in the first semifinal on Friday against Orange Coast, Princeton, MIT, Harvard and Temple. A top three finish would qualify the Bulldogs for Saturday's Grand Final.
