Bulldogs to Fence at Brandeis Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - On Saturday Dec. 5, the Yale men's fencing team will travel to Waltham, Mass., to compete in the Brandeis Invitational. The event will be the Bulldogs' first team competition of the season; before the Thanksgiving break, the Elis kicked off the season with the Penn State Open-an individual tournament.

At last year's competition, the Bulldogs won all four of their dual meets. The Elis defeated Boston College by a final score of 16-11, St. John's by a score of 15-12, Brandeis by a score of 17-10 and MIT by a score of 15-12. Yale's wins against Brandeis and St. John's were the first in four years. This year, UNC is a new addition to the tournament.

"Our goal is to go 5-0 this weekend," said captain Andrew Holbrook. "Building on last year's undefeated performance, this is a definitely achievable goal. As our first dual meet tournament of the season, this will be a good opportunity to help focus our training when the season really gets underway next semester. With a very strong freshman class fielding several starters, we will be looking to them for some real contributions and important victories."

Senior manager Thomas Bell agreed with Holbrook's sentiments.

"We'll be fencing some strong teams this Saturday, but not one that we can't beat," said Thomas. "The goal is to go have a successful outing and to build momentum for the Ivy competitions which are coming up after winter break."

In their last competition, the Penn State Open, the Bulldogs had four of their foilists finish among the top 16 fencers in the foil tournament. Additionally, freshman Colin Mills finished seventh in the saber tournament.

Competition at the Brandeis Invitational will begin at 9 a.m.
