Bulldogs Host Sacred Heart

Look to Reverse Last Year's Result

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale men's fencing team will kick off spring competition with a Jan. 19 bout against Sacred Heart at home in Payne Whitney Gymnasium.

The Elis will look to build on their strong momentum from the Dec. 2 Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass., where they finished 5-1, a result that included wins against Boston College, Brandeis, Johns Hopkins, MIT and UNC. That preparation will be crucial as the Bulldogs take on Sacred Heart, whom they fell to last year 17-10.

The Bulldogs and the Pioneers have a history of close match-ups; in 2011, the Elis lost a 14-13 heartbreaker against Sacred Heart. And last year's result came after one of Yale's most experienced fencers had to pull out due to illness.

This weekend's match will also help the Yale team prepare for the Jan. 27-28 NYU Invitational, an event at which the Bulldogs posted a 3-2 result last year. Following the New York event, the Elis will take on Vassar in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Feb. 2.

All these competitions will lead up to the Feb. 9-10 Ivy League Championship, held this year at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. Successful fencers at that event will proceed to the Mar. 10 NCAA Northeast Regional event.
