Cohen Finishes Fifth in Epee
QUEENS, N.Y. — A powerful fifth-place finish in epee competition by junior Peter Cohen led the way as ten members of the Yale men's fencing team competed Sunday at the Mar. 10 NCAA Northeast Regional.
Seeking a berth at the Mar. 21-24 NCAA National Championship in San Antonio, Texas, Cohen performed strongly throughout the day's competition to finish in fifth. As a result of his performance on Sunday, as well as throughout the season, Cohen advanced in fifth place to the NCAA National Championship.
He was not the only Yale fencer to finish in the top eight: sophomore Hugh O'Cinneide put up a seventh-place finish in saber competition. That result, alongside his season performance, was enough to vault him into the NCAA National Championship in seventh place.
Yale qualified the maximum of 10 fencers for Sunday's competition, hosted this year by St. John's at the Carnesecca Arena and Taffner Field House in Queens, N.Y.
Other Yale fencers to perform well included sophomore Sam Broughton and freshman Jin Ishizuka, who finished in 15th and 22nd place, respectively, in foil competition. In saber, senior William Zhao finished in 20th place.
The NCAA National Championship qualifiers will be formally announced by the NCAA on Tuesday.
