Looks for Strong Start to Spring Season

New Haven, Conn.—The Yale men's fencing team looks to start off its spring season on the right foot when it faces the Pioneers of Sacred Heart this Saturday, Jan. 18, in Payne Whitney Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 4-1 showing at the Brandeis Invitational, which took place on Dec. 8, shortly before winter recess. They look to carry their momentum into this weekend's one-on-one matchup with Sacred Heart. The Elis are coming off a one-month period of rest, so should be fresh and healthy, albeit perhaps a bit out of practice, for this weekend's match.

Yale faced Sacred Heart in a similar home bout last season, which the Pioneers won in a close 14-13 finish. In that matchup, the Bulldogs rode strong performances by current sophomore Brian Wang and junior Hugh O'Cinneide, with both fencers posting impressive 3-0 records. Yale's épée and sabre squads each turned in 5-4 victories over their Pioneer counterparts, while the foil squad posted a 3-6 overall record. Yale will rely heavily upon an improved foil squad this time around, which spearheaded the team's effort at Brandeis earlier this season.

A win would carry much significance for this Bulldog side, which hopes for a boost of confidence heading into its important spring season.

The meeting with Sacred Heart is one of just three home matches for the Bulldogs this season. The bout will begin at 1:00 p.m., and will take place on the seventh floor of Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
