Bulldogs Look for Boost at Home

Square Off with Vassar, Drew

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Yale men's fencing will have its final two home bouts of the season on Saturday, Feb.1, as it faces off against Drew University and Vassar College in Payne Whitney Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs are coming off a positive Jan. 25 trip to New York City for the NYU Invitational, where they posted a 3-2 record. Yale topped NYU, UNC and Wayne State, while falling to Notre Dame and OSU. Continuing a season trend, Yale benefitted from strong performances from freshmen, sophomores and upperclassmen alike.  The epee and foil squads bolstered the Yale side.  Senior Captain Cornelius Saunders won an important match against Wayne State, while sophomore Jin Ishizuka went undefeated UNC.

Yale will look to build on those performances in this weekend's matchups. Last season, Yale traveled to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for a Feb. 2 round-robin against Drew, Sacred Heart and Vassar. The Bulldogs beat Drew 22-5 and took down Vassar 17-10 (though they fell to Sacred Heart in a 14-13 heartbreaker).  Peter Cohen led the team, turning in a dominant 5-0 record.

The Elis will hope to emulate that performance from a year ago. After getting off to a strong start to their spring season, they will look to improve on their consistency heading into the late season Ivy Championship and NCAA Championships. The former will take place next weekend on Feb. 8-9 in Providence, R.I.
