NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs battled to a 1-2 record at the Ivy North Competition, Sunday. The event, which was hosted at Yale's Payne Whitney Gymnasium, marked the first of two days of round robin fencing to determine the 2008 Ivy League Championship. The Elis defeated Brown (18-9), but fell to Penn (17-10) and Harvard (18-9).
Against Brown, the Bulldogs' epee and sabre squads both won. The epee squad of junior Michael Pearce (3-0), senior Gabe Billings (3-0) and senior captain Steve Miller (2-1) posted an 8-1 victory. The sabre squad nailed down a 6-3 win, with freshman Stephen Watty registering three victories. The Yale foil squad lost, 5-4. Sophomore John Gurrieri did win three bouts though.
In the day's first match, Yale was bettered by Penn, 17-10. The foil squad won, 6-3. Again Gurrieri was a perfect 3-0. Fellow sophomore Andrew Holbrook pitched in two wins of his own. The epee squad lost, 5-4, while the saberists fell, 9-0.
Harvard also defeated the Bulldogs, 18-9. Yale's foil squad again came through with a victory, fencing to a closely fought 5-4 win. The Eli sabre and epee squads lost by matching 7-2 tallies. Pearce was able to register two wins though.
Yale will travel to Princeton, N.J. on Feb. 10 for the conclusion of the two part Ivy League Championships. They will take on Columbia and Princeton.
