NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs came up one bout short of toppling traditional foe Princeton Sunday at Part II of the Ivy League 2007 Fencing Championships in Cambridge, Mass. Yale also lost to Harvard, 19-8. The team finishes its dual meet schedule with a 10-10 mark, making it the first Yale team since the 2001-02 unit to secure a .500 record.
The Bulldog foil squad edged Princeton's foilists, 5-4. But the epee and sabre squads both lost by the same 5-4 tally. Freshman foilist Andrew Holbrook won all three of his bouts, while epeeists, junior Michael Pearce and senior John Beski, and saberist, junior Bradley Broadhead, all notched 2-1 records.
Against Harvard, the foil squad pulled out a 5-4 victory. Freshman John Gurrieri and senior captain Michael Aboodi each posted 2-1 records. In the epee squad's close 5-4 loss, Pearce tallied two more wins.
With a win in their head-to-head meet today, Harvard gained a share of the Ivy Crown with Columbia, who had been undefeated. The Crimson won the 2006 Ivy League Championship.
Yale returns to action on March 3rd in Lawrenceville, N.J. at the IFA Championships.
