In an impressive first-day peformance, foiler Cory Werk stands in third place overall out of 24 competitors at the NCAAs, hosted by Brandeis College. Michael Rohrbach, Yale's other fencer at the meet, is in 21st place in the epee. Combined with the women's scores from Thursday and Friday, the Elis are in 13th place as a team.
Werk won 11 of his 14 bouts, earning a .786 winning percentage and third place going into tomorrows medal rounds. He was one of only two Ivy Leaguers to break the top three standings, with Columbia's Alexander Krul earning third in the saber. Rohrbach had a tougher day, winining four duels for a .286 percentage.
The men's results, combined with the womens' from the days before, place Yale in 13th as a team with 37 points. The Elis will have a chance to move up in the standings tomorrow.
