Bulldogs Start Regular Season With Victory Over NYU

Nov. 30, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs opened the season with a win tonight over NYU, 14-13. It was an extremely close match that came down to the final three bouts. Tied at 12-12, Yale foilists, freshmen John Gurrieri and Andrew Holbrook, won their bouts to lift the Elis to victory. It's Yale's first win over the Violets since December 2, 2003.

The epee squad carried the load, posting a 7-2 record. They, in turn, were led by sophomore standout Michael Pearce, who went 3-0 on the day. Senior John Beski and junior Steve Miller both won two of their three bouts.

Senior Christopher Peterson went 1-2 for the sabre squad. Junior Bradley Broadhead and sophomore Sebastian Cano-Besquet both recorded an 0-3 record. This squad was the strength of the NYU team, as they won eight of the nine bouts contested.

But it was the foil squad that provided the final push to victory. With just three bouts remaining, Holbrook and Gurrieri both won to put the match out of reach. They each went 3-0 on the day. Senior captain Michael Aboodi was winless in three bouts.

The Bulldogs travel to Waltham, Mass. for the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday.
