NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs won two of four matches at the Brandeis Invitational Sunday to push their overall season record to 3-2. The team got wins over Boston College (16-11) and MIT (15-12). But it suffered defeats to host Brandeis (16-11) and St. John's (19-8).
The Bulldogs won close matches against both Boston College and MIT. Against the Eagles, Yale foilists and epeeists won 14 of 18 bouts to secure the Bulldog victory. The sabre squad posted a 2-7 record.
The sabre squad did find success, however, against MIT, winning five bouts. Yale ended up defeating the Engineers 15-12. In this match, it was the foil squad that made the difference, as it won six of its nine bouts. The epee squad battled to a 4-5 record.
Yale's foilists beat Brandeis', 5-4. But the sabre squad (2-7) and the epee squad (4-5) took losses, as the Bulldogs fell to the Judges, 16-11.
The Elis also lost to St. John's, 19-8. Each of the three Yale squads was defeated. The epee and foil squads both fell by a score of 6-3. The sabre squad lost seven of its nine bouts against the Red Storm.
Overall, the foil squad had the greatest success, winning 24 of its 36 bouts. The usual strength of the Yale team, the epee squad, won 18 bouts. The sabre squad pitched in 11 victories.
The Bulldogs will play host to Rutgers on January 27, 2007 at Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
