The Bulldogs won their first two bouts of the season Sunday against tough competition at the Brandeis Invitational. The Elis upended MIT 14-13 and Boston College 17-10, but fell 10-17 to Brandeis, 9-18 to St. Johns, and 10-17 to Ivy-foe Brown.
Against Boston College, Yale took the sabre 8-1 and epee 6-3 before falling 3-6 in foil. John Beski won all three of his bouts in epee. Yale also toppled MIT thanks to 6-3 victories in epee and sabre, losing only the foil 2-7.
The other three bouts did not go quite as well for the Elis, who lost 6-3 in each weapon to St. Johns. The Bulldogs also lost to Brown, going down 7-2 in foil and epee, though taking epee 8-1. Yale salvaged a 7-2 epee win against Brandeis, but dropped foil 9-0 and sabre 6-3.
Michael Pearce is proving himself to be quite the freshman standout, going 13-2 on the day and improving his season record to 16-2.
The Bulldogs return to action after the new year when they travel to Vassar.
