NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale claimed a 15-12 victory against Sacred Heart in its home opener Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Bulldogs' season record to 3-2 and sends the Elis into the winter recess on a winning note. The sabre squad paced the win, tallying a 6-3 victory.
In the sabre squad's win, junior Sebastian Cano-Besquet notched a perfect 3-0 record, only surrendering five touches. Freshman Stephen Watty recorded a 2-1 mark, while senior Bradley Broadhead won one bout.
The Bulldog foil squad also found success, winning 5-4. Sophomore sensation John Gurrieri, who took third place at the season-opening Penn St. Open, won all three of his bouts while only allowing three touches. Fellow sophomore standout, Andrew Holbrook, collected two victories of his own.
Epeeist Michael Pearce continued his winning ways, in Yale's 5-4 loss to the Pioneers' epee squad. The junior who claimed second at the Penn St. Open in November posted a 2-0 record on the day. The Bulldogs also received wins from senior epeeists, Steve Miller and Gabe Billings.
The Elis next host Vassar on Jan. 23 at Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn.
