Feb. 10, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomores Rebecca Moss, Lidia Gocheva and John Gurrieri and junior Michael Pearce earned All-Ivy honors Sunday. Moss, Gurrieri and Pearce were all named to the 1st Team, while Gocheva made the 2nd Team.

The selections were made according to a fencer's record in the round robin Ivy League team championship that took place over two days, Feb. 3 in New Haven, Conn., and Feb. 10 in Princeton, N.J. The fencers with the best three records were named to the 1st Team. Those with the next three best records were named to the 2nd team. Fencers had to have competed in 75 percent of their team's bouts. That means that the men must have had at least 12 decisions on their Ivy record, and the women must have had at least 14 decisions.

Moss, Gurrieri and Pearce each tallied the second best record with their respective weapons.

Moss, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., went 12-3 over the two day span to lead the Bulldog epee squad. Columbia's Maryna Urbanowicz posted a 16-2 mark. Jasjit Bhinder (Princeton) and Maria Larsson (Harvard) rounded out the 1st Team with matching 13-5 records.

Gurrieri, also a sophomore, from Medford, N.J., went 11-4 during Ivy League competition. His record with the foil was bettered by only one other fencer, Columbia's Kurt Getz (12-3).

Junior epeeist, Michael Pearce, a San Francisco, Calif. native, went 10-2. His .833 winning percentage placed him second among Ivy League epeeists. Columbia's Max Czapanskiy notched a 13-2 tally.

Sophomore foilist, Lidia Gocheva, a Sofia, Bulgaria native, won 12 of 18 bouts to earn 2nd Team All-Ivy honors.
