9 Bulldogs Earn All-Ivy Status

Sheffield, Rice, Money, Mante First-Teamers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Nine members of the Yale football team were named to the 2009 All-Ivy League Team announced today, including first-team selections  TE John Sheffield (Portland, Ore), LB Paul Rice (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), DB Adam Money (Whiteland, Ind.) and P Tom Mante (Westford, Mass.).

The Bulldogs, 4-6 this fall, had four first-team picks, two second-teamers and three honorable mention selections among the six seniors and three juniors.

Sheffield, a senior who made his first all-conference team, led the Bulldogs with 61 catches and 612 yards while finishing third on Yale's career receptions list with 126. He was named team MVP at Sunday's team banquet.

Rice returned to the All-Ivy team after leading the Elis with 49 solo tackles and 74 overall. The senior captain also had a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss.

Money, a junior, earned first-team honors by making 43 total tackles, picking off three passes (one went 77 yards for a TD), forcing three fumbles and recovering two opponent drops.  He also had a 22.9 average (3rd in Ivy) on kick returns and an 8.1 average returning punts.

Mante, a 2008 All-Ivy League P and PK, led the Ancient Eight with a 41.2 punting average that included 10 over 50 yards and 17 that landed inside the 20-yard line.  The senior who started all 40 games during his Yale career earned second-team PK honors as well. His league-record (tie) 54-yard FG against Cornell and a 50-yarder at Georgetown had much to do with his second straight dual selection. Mante also averaged 61.7 yards on kickoffs and had four touchbacks.

Senior DT Tom McCarthy was a second-team choice after making 29 tackles and three sacks. McCarthy, who will take advantage of a medical hardship from his freshman year, returns for his fourth collegiate season next fall as the new captain.

Juniors DT Joe Young (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and LB Sean Williams (Portland, Ore) and senior LB Travis Henry (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) were honorable mention All-Ivy. Young had 24 tackles and two sacks, Williams notched 20 stops and a three sacks while Henry (26 tackles), one of the hardest hitters in the Ivies, had two fumble recoveries and a pair of forced fumbles.
